Holiday update comming soon Print E-mail
Sunday, 28 January 2007

beefy_boonieI go back to work tomorrow after two weeks leave with Emma and Brad. I'll post an update on what we got up to soon, but for now I just have to share what Boonie just said. The Australian Open tennis final is on the telly at the same time as the Australia V New Zealand one day cricket match. Boonie just shouted "Forget the Oz open, get the VB open"!

Akmal rocks Print E-mail
Wednesday, 17 January 2007

It's official, Akmal Saleh from the Glasshouse, JJJ and Thank God Your Here rocks. I wrote a story a while ago about how Emma spotted him in Hobart on New Years Eve and wanted to take a photo of him with her phone but by the time that I finally woke up to what was going on he had left. Emma was snodgy so I sent the following letter to Akmal;

G'day Akmal,

I got your email address from your website www.akmal.com.au

My 13 year old daughter spotted you at Mures fish restaurant on Hobart's waterfront early on New Years Eve.

She wanted me to take a photo of the two of you with her mobile phone, but I told her not to be so rude and that she should show some respect for the entertainment and enjoyment you have provided her via Thank God You Are Here and let you enjoy your meal (and the pretty woman you were with) in peace.

Now comes the good bit. This is where I hit you up for free stuff. Because I'm such a good bloke and because my daughter now hates me so much I reckon the least you can do is send her a signed photo or a signed poster, or anything really that is somehow related to you or the show. Even money would be good, but I know that you poor actors don't have any of that. This may in some small way atone for the hurt I caused her by refusing to take that photo.

I know you are a good bloke (your bald like me so you must be) so please send the stuff to;

<Emma's address>

I then promptly forgot about it never expecting a mega God like Akmal to take any notice of me or my email until the following poster turned up in the mail today!!!!!

Crash Print E-mail
Monday, 15 January 2007

I've been hanging at home for the past week because I tore a muscle in my shoulder, but too much alcohol, a bald head and sun are a bad combination. I'm sure the doctor that cut the last basal cell carcinoma from my forehead would be horrified if he saw how red I am today. I thought the picture below was kinda funny, however I'm sure the people in the plane at the time wern't laughing.

Beefy and Boonie Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 January 2007

beefy_boonieI ordered the new Beefy and Boonie talking dolls weeks ago and when do you think they finally turned up? Yep, the last day of the last test, but I was at work and the test finished early (tests are all four days now arn't they?) so it was over by the time I took them out of their box. I assumed that was it and I'd never hear them talk, until a few days ago when I flew out of the shower to see who was shouting in the lounge only to find Boonie asking Beefy to chuck him a VB. Beefy declined claiming that Boonie would probably drop it. They said a few more things during the day and then nothing. Tonight about 30 minutes before the 20/20 match started Boonie asked me to put the VB on ice because the cricket was about to start. YES! they are still alive. They obviously know that it's a 20/20 game because Boonie reckons he loves them because he can get to the pub quicker. They have chatted to each other a few times during the game and then I assume they will go quite until the next game. They have a little infrared thingy on them like a remote control so that they can talk to each other. Apparently they fired up on Melbourne cup day and started singing Christmas Carols on the 25th! This is fun, but it still scares me a little bit when you think you are the only person in the house and you hear "Ooh, Ahh, Glen McGrath" shouted out from the lounge room!

Tasweb time zone is wrong. Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 January 2007

I duuno if anyone has noticed, but the timezone is wrong on some parts of Tasweb. The actual server is in New Zealand, so it is currently a couple of hours ahead of Tasmania. The software (Joomla) that I use to glue all of this together lets me set the timezone and some stuff then works, but I'v grabbed other bits of software (e.g. story comments and games) that don't use Joomla's timezone and call the time directly from the server. I could hack each of these to call the correct time, but I'd have to do that each time I upgrade, so for now I'm going to leave it. If I think it becomes too big a deal then I'll look at fixing it properly.

Enjoy the new games  and don't forget to register and login if you want your high scores saved. I'm going to have to hack the game software to stop it from showing your full name, I'd prefer it to only show your username, but that's currently not an option I can select. [EDIT] Done!

New Years funny stuff Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 January 2007
akmalA couple of other funny things that I could have mentioned. When we first arrived at the Cenotaph to watch the fireworks it was only about 8:30pm and there wasn't anyone else there so we all walked down to the waterfront to buy an icecream. No one else in Mures other than Emma seemed to notice that the very funny Akmal Saleh from the television show Thank God Your Here was sitting at a table right next to us. By the time she thought to grab her phone to take a photo he and the woman he was with had left. Then there were the sprinklers. The whole Cenotaph area is watered at night time with recycled water from the waste water treatment plant. The silly Hobart City Council didn't turn them off for New Years Eve! We were all relaxed on our rugs with blankets, sleeping bags food, wine, kids etc etc when the first lot came on at about 11pm. Luckily they were just next to us but didn't get us wet. They then came on and off in different sections. The main field up there was covered in cars by midnight as the council had been advertising free parking and it was about then that the sprinklers came on all around and underneath the cars. You should have seen the water going everywhere. There must be a few cars in Hobart with very clean bottoms. I think it was only good luck that the hundreds of people that had turned up by midnight to watch the fireworks with us didn't end up showered with effluent just like their cars did.

Happy New Year Print E-mail
Tuesday, 02 January 2007

allison_and_scottHappy New Year! It's been a fairly crazy week for me. The last work day before Christmas started at 7am with a champagne breakfast at Montgomery's, kicked on with a lunch at work, warmed up with more beers at Monty's after work and then wound down with Linda, Luan, Scott, Tim, and a heap of others I'd never met before at Knopies/Irish/The Quarry on the waterfront. We had the usual "Happy Birthday Emily" BBQ at the Dooles on boxing day and once again I was the last one to leave. I must stop doing that because I always end up helping out with the washing up! Mel and I have slowed our relationship down a bit, but we are still great mates and have spent a fair bit of time together. We were invited to a wedding months ago so we both went to that between Christmas and New Year. I hadn't met the bride or the groom, or anyone else there for that matter, but we had a great time. The bride was an old friend of Mel's. The wedding was at Hobart's Botanical Gardens and the reception was at Mummaluka at Salamanca Place (click their photo to see more pictures). There was way too much red wine on the table so I HAD to drink it all. I met some great people who I hope to see again some time. Best wishes for the future Allison and Scott! Mel was driving, but instead of taking me home she took me to a party somewhere on the Eastern Shore where I didn't know anyone again, but we had the best time. I can't remember a lot of the detail, but if the cute part time ambulance paramedic that I was talking to (until Mel saved her) reads this could she please give me a call! We saw Greg and Noel play in the Blues Brothers Revival Band in an all ages gig at the Queens Head. They are awsome entertainment and much more than "just a band". Greg amazed us with the high notes that he hits on the saxophone and Brad appreciated the private tour of the equipment and stage. Emma, Brad and I along with a heap of others saw in the New Year from the Hobart Cenotaph. Emma and Brad had never met the others (apart from Calypso and Tamsyn) , but it turned out one of the girls used to be in Emma's Guide group and she seemed to know her brother somehow as well so they all got along really well. It was a great place to watch the fireworks, relax, have a few drinks on a rug and watch the kids run around like crazy.

P.S. Who is Aaron Schwes and how on earth did he ever beat Emily's awsome high score on Simon?
