Happy New Year Print E-mail
Tuesday, 02 January 2007

allison_and_scottHappy New Year! It's been a fairly crazy week for me. The last work day before Christmas started at 7am with a champagne breakfast at Montgomery's, kicked on with a lunch at work, warmed up with more beers at Monty's after work and then wound down with Linda, Luan, Scott, Tim, and a heap of others I'd never met before at Knopies/Irish/The Quarry on the waterfront. We had the usual "Happy Birthday Emily" BBQ at the Dooles on boxing day and once again I was the last one to leave. I must stop doing that because I always end up helping out with the washing up! Mel and I have slowed our relationship down a bit, but we are still great mates and have spent a fair bit of time together. We were invited to a wedding months ago so we both went to that between Christmas and New Year. I hadn't met the bride or the groom, or anyone else there for that matter, but we had a great time. The bride was an old friend of Mel's. The wedding was at Hobart's Botanical Gardens and the reception was at Mummaluka at Salamanca Place (click their photo to see more pictures). There was way too much red wine on the table so I HAD to drink it all. I met some great people who I hope to see again some time. Best wishes for the future Allison and Scott! Mel was driving, but instead of taking me home she took me to a party somewhere on the Eastern Shore where I didn't know anyone again, but we had the best time. I can't remember a lot of the detail, but if the cute part time ambulance paramedic that I was talking to (until Mel saved her) reads this could she please give me a call! We saw Greg and Noel play in the Blues Brothers Revival Band in an all ages gig at the Queens Head. They are awsome entertainment and much more than "just a band". Greg amazed us with the high notes that he hits on the saxophone and Brad appreciated the private tour of the equipment and stage. Emma, Brad and I along with a heap of others saw in the New Year from the Hobart Cenotaph. Emma and Brad had never met the others (apart from Calypso and Tamsyn) , but it turned out one of the girls used to be in Emma's Guide group and she seemed to know her brother somehow as well so they all got along really well. It was a great place to watch the fireworks, relax, have a few drinks on a rug and watch the kids run around like crazy.

P.S. Who is Aaron Schwes and how on earth did he ever beat Emily's awsome high score on Simon?

Frogger Print E-mail
Friday, 29 December 2006

froggerI've upgraded the arcade game software and as a bonus it came with an extra game. You can now play that old favorite Frogger and it will keep your high score. I'm waiting for the next upgrade because that should allow me to load up heaps of high score enabled games. Get stuck into Frogger now because the only high score is a really pathetic one I did just to test it. I'm also toying with the idea of trashing all of the high scores at the end of each year and recording the years champions in a story. If you think I should or shouldn't trash the existing high scores then leave a comment on this story.

Tasmanian bushfire video Print E-mail
Friday, 29 December 2006

I mentioned in an earlier story that a guy I work with (Chris) lost his Fathers house in the recent bushfires at Four Mile Creek. After his Fathers house was lost they retreated to Chri's property to protect that. A few properties up the road (about 800 metres) a family were doing the same but their son had a video camera and filmed the whole thing. The YouTube video below shows what happened as they retreated inside the house and then back further to the sea. There is sound, so turn up your speakers as hearing the voices makes you realise just how scary it must have been.

Rolex Sydney to Hobart Print E-mail

s2hlogoThe Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race has started for another year. All the talk is about Wild Oates and Skandia, but I reckon Maximus is one to watch for line honours. The official web site can be seen here, and if you have Google Earth installed then you can use it to view the yachts by clicking here.

Merry Christmas Print E-mail
Monday, 25 December 2006
christmas_bellsMerry Christmas to all our family and friends as well as all the other people who stumble across Tasweb via Google and stuff. Now that E & B have their presents I can talk about some of the drama's that led up to this Christmas. It all started when I decided to buy Emma an Ipod for her Birthday. Being cheap I thought I'd look on Ebay and ended up buying a Nano from a guy on the mainland. It arrived on time all packaged up and looking great. I charged it up, loaded some songs and all was swell until I noticed that it had lost it's charge after only an hour or so. I tried again (charged it overnight) and the same thing happened. I also noticed a slight imperfection in the front case, but I wasn't worried about it. I showed an Apple guru at work and straight away he noticed that it didn't look right. The writing on the back looked wrong and the serial number on the back was different to the serial number shown in the display. I called Apple Australia and they said that one serial number was from a black Nano (mine was white) sold in Canada a few months ago and the serial printed on the back wasn't a valid serial number at all. I then took it into the local Apple shop and compared the packaging to the real thing only to find that my box was a poor photocopy onto cardboard of an original. They sent me to the Police, but they didn't know what to do and referred me back to Ebay. I threatened the guys that sold it to me with the Police and they gave me my money back.

Then there is the story of Emma's poster. There was a huge poster of the new Monaro left in the Motor's showroom window after they moved to their new building.  I rang and asked if I could have it for Emma's Christmas present. No worries, they said, someone will call you back soon. A week went by and no one called and then the poster disappeared. I was chatting to Donna (Emma's mum) and she started to tell me about this great poster that she had scored from Motor's. What do you reckon the chances are of the two of us asking for the same poster at the same time to give to the same daughter!!!! Only in Tasmania!

Brad scored this awesome gyroscope thing called a Powerball. You thread a string on it, rip the string out and then hold it in your hand and try to spin it up to insane speeds. It has a rev counter on it so you can see how fast it goes. I managed to get it up to about 11000 rpm, but the world record is over 16000 rpm! It really makes a noise when it's up to speed and because it has a heavy gyroscope spinning inside it resists movement so it's all you can do to hang onto it! Check out the YouTube video below of Akis the world champion. Note that Akis being a champion he doesn't even need the string, he starts it with his fingers.

Kingston High School Association press release Print E-mail

KINGSTON HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATION Inc. MEDIA RELEASE 20th December, 2006

The Kingston High School Association is seeking an urgent meeting with Premier Paul Lennon to reaffirm the Government’s commitment to build a much needed new high school.

Representatives of the Kingston High School Association last night gave a report to the school’s Parents and Friends Association on their meeting last week with the education Minister, David Bartlett.

The President of the Kingston High School Association, Mr Lex McIndoe, said last night’s meeting endorsed the proposal to seek an urgent meeting with the Premier.

“Given the current uncertainty, the Parents and Friends agreed with the Kingston High School Association that this issue needs to be cleared up before the start of first term next year to give everybody confidence about the future,” Mr McIndoe said.

“The new school was promised in the State election and funding was announced in the State Budget and endorsed both by the Premier and by the Minister for Education in their budget speeches.

“The existing school is old, has had next to nothing spent on it for more than a decade, is in a poor location for students and will not meet the future needs of students.

Mr McIndoe questioned the wisdom of Governments continually patching up inappropriate school facilities.

“Governments and educational administrators all over the world are acknowledging that education is the economic engine of communities and that existing school facilities are totally inappropriate in the shift from teacher-centred to learner-centred education”, Mr McIndoe said.

“Professor Brian Caldwell, Managing Director of Educational Transformations Pty Ltd and previously Dean of Education at the Universities of Melbourne and Tasmania, said on the ABC’s 7.30 Report earlier in the year that Australia had hundreds of schools built 30-40 years ago that should be bulldozed and replaced with schools that are suited to learning in the 21st century.

“This is the time for the Government to take a leadership role and build on the successes of Reece High School to demonstrate the educational and community advantages of a contemporary education complex, integrated with community cultural and recreational facilities.

Tasmanian Government yet to declare its intentions Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 December 2006

Last night I attended a Kingston High School P&F meeting and was able to report on my meeting with the Minister for Education David Bartlett held on Friday last week. The Minister was very positive when talking about his desire to ensure the best possible educational outcomes for the youth of Kingborough, however he stopped short of actually stating that the new school will go ahead as promised by the Premier and the other Labour members for Franklin. What the Minister did say was that he "is committed to the current process". Unfortunately he would not elaborate on exactly which process he was referring to or any of the detail of that process, so we were left to assume that he was referring to the current process of relocating the children from Kingston High School to a new state of the art educational and community facility on the grounds of the Kingborough Sports Centre by the year 2010. This was after all the reason why we were there so no other conclusion could be drawn.

This morning's Mercury carried another story that quoted a representative from one of the other Southern Schools opposed to the new High School at Kingston. Taroona Association Chair Yeutha May (is that the same Yeutha {and Doug} that I knew from quite a few years ago? If it is then Hi and merry Christmas to you and your family.) is asking the Premier for a full cost benefit analysis of the new school. Whilst it is becoming very annoying to see one side of the discussion being given far more real estate in the Mercury than the other (Yeutha managed to have 95 words from her press release quoted, however the press release issued from our Association last week only had about five words quoted and a previous one only 47), I agree that the Premier needs to make a firm statement about the future of this project as soon as possible. The current "school versus school" situation is very bad for the community as a whole and we haven't seen any signs from the Government that they intend doing anything about it. If the orchestrated campaign by a small handful of other Southern schools is successful in stopping the new school then that will set a very unfortunate precedent for any other school that attempts to go down the same path in the future, and it will send a very clear signal to the voters of Tasmania about the Lennon Labour Governments commitment to the youth of Tasmania.

Napier Print E-mail

ImageTasweb has never been on holiday before. It's always sat in my garage in the dark and the dust toiling away without complaint. I didn't think this was very stimulating and there wasn't much of an opportunity to meet others and socialise so I've sent it on a road trip. It's currently in the beautiful art deco city of Napier on New Zealand's North Island. I didn't send the whole PC away, I've just relocated the software and stuff that makes it sing. It might seem strange that moving the web site to New Zealand has made it load faster, but the Napier site has much better Internet bandwidth than my garage and the guy that runs the server knows a lot more about all that techy stuff than I do. Thanks TiM for your generous offer, and thanks also to Tony!
