How to reprogram your Mitsubishi Verada / Magna remote
Monday, 22 May 2006

key.jpgI discovered that going swimming with your car keys in your pocket isn't a good idea. When the rust starts to oooze out of the remote control thingy it stops working. No problem I thought, just ring the local Mitsubishi dealer. I'm sure they were rubbing their hands together before I even rang. $70 to buy one remote and then another $95 to reprogram it. Geeez, but isn't Google a wonderful thing? Within a few minutes I had already reprogrammed it on my own. The actual reprogramming itself is done from the drivers seat, requires nothing other than your car key, takes about 5 seconds and they charge $95 for it !!!!!!!

Don't blame me if this makes toast come out of your CD player or something much worse! What you have to do is jump in the car and shut the doors. Put your key in the ignition then turn it to ON, back to ACC, back to ON, back to ACC and then back to ON again. The indicators should all flash. Now press any of the buttons on your remote. The indicators should flash again. Your done. I only have one remote, so I'm not sure what you do if you have more than one, but I'm sure you can work it out. Perhaps you press a button on all remotes before turning the ignition back to off, but I'm pretty sure that you have to reprogram them all at the same time otherwise your existing remotes will be snapped and only the new one will work. I also think that you can do up to four remotes for the one car but I havn't tried it.

Thanks for the info on reprogramming Verada keys. Do you know if this has tio be
done if you change a battery?
phill  - Yep   |14-02-2007 22:06:27
I think you probably do because another guy (Bruce) mentioned here that he had
to do this after a battery replacement. Glad to hear that my story was helpfull.
Cory   |IP:139.168.150.xxx |04-03-2007 21:46:13
thanks for this information, my mothers battery went dead for the 2nd time and
needed changing... last time it costs about $200 - i changed the battery and
found your article and gave it a go and it worked.

thank you! much
appreciated!
Jamie   |IP:58.108.232.xxx |17-03-2007 13:54:34
thank you your information was spot on, only for magna 2000 model indicators
dont flash, an audible tone played. but everything else was just as you
described.

We've heard horror strories of replacement cost and decided to purchase new
batteries so we've had batteries and remote not working until we read this Thank
You.
Brett   |IP:210.84.47.xxx |10-08-2007 15:42:44
Great info!

I'm really a computer person, not a car person. I can't believe
how Mitsubishi would keep this simple procedure; something obviously designed to
be done by the owner - a *secret* Their mentality is in the 1960s!

There are
scabs on eBay SELLING this info for $5 or more.

You're a champ!
phill  - Thanks Brett   |10-08-2007 16:35:41
Thanks Brett. I guess I could be like the others and charge for it, but I just
rely on the fact that the advertising on this page is relevant to the people
that come here and that they will find something of interest to them. That way I
might receive a little bit of return for the research that I did. At the end of
the day this information is available publically, so it would be wrong to charge
for it!
Mark  - Thanks mate   |IP:203.202.11.xxx |29-08-2007 17:40:16
Thanks mate!
You've done a top job helping fellow owners avoid the $$ charged by
the dealerships.
Ally  - Thanks!   |IP:203.52.130.xxx |17-09-2007 17:54:47
Brilliant. I have a little pajero 4x4 (1999). no flashing indicators or noises,
but it worked a treat.

my key remote has got a range of a very short distance..i literally have to go
very near to my car to get it working..is it normal..and what should i do to
have long range??
Willo  - Battery Holder ?   |IP:122.106.111.xxx |20-11-2007 18:07:10
Check this link. You may have low current to the electronics due high resistance
solder joints to the battery holder.

Just press the other transmitters(max of 4) within 10 seconds of first
transmitter
Tshemar  - Will it work on american diama   |IP:68.96.3.xxx |06-06-2008 19:39:44
will this procedure work on the american version as well?
phill  - Dunno   |07-06-2008 01:57:15
avatar I honestly don't know, but if you try it and it does work then please come back
and let us know as it might help out some others.
Oz   |IP:124.176.66.xxx |10-06-2008 18:46:41
Also works on Mitsubishi Magnas if anyone is interested.
Dude  - Works on 2005 Magna TW   |IP:121.45.140.xxx |17-07-2008 14:39:42
Just tried on the 05 TW, works! Ideal.

Adolf  - Old news!   |IP:60.241.142.xxx |05-09-2008 00:49:16
This is real old news! Just reading your owners manual will show you how to code
a remote.
The procedure is NOT the same for the Pajero, so that person is a
LIAR.
Also, a 2000 model will flash the indicators... all models did. None of
them gave off an audible tune. LIAR!
phill  - Gosh   |05-09-2008 12:03:14
avatar Gosh, I'm sure none of the people above have intentionally lied. Perhaps your
reality is a little different to theirs Adolf.

My car did not have a manual
when I purchased it second hand so I did not know that this information was in
there.

I guess the fact that it might be in the user manual makes the fact that
the dealers don't tell you about it and then charge so much to do it themselves
even worse. I'm also a little surprised that so many of us didn't realise that
it is mentioned in the user manual.

Are you sure it's not the workshop manual
that dealers have that you are thinking of Adolf?
Peter K  - Not all dealers charge   |IP:220.233.89.xxx |13-10-2008 20:53:25
I discovered this page after living without a remote. I don't drive it very much
and my wife pinched mine when hers stopped working. Now hers had stopped so I
spoke to my dealer. He told me how to do it and also said that if I had to buy a
new one(s) there would be no charge.

PS. My 2004 Magna SW did not flash
indicators, just sounded a noise.
Greg  - great tip!!!   |IP:124.168.218.xxx |25-10-2008 15:51:39
thanks!! saved me a trip to the dealer. =:-)
tina  - Thanks!!   |IP:121.215.136.xxx |04-12-2008 20:07:44
Thanks for this. My dad had pried this out of a local dealer, and I tried it
but couldn't get it to work. What I failed to do (which you mentioned) was to
have all doors shut, and to press the button while the accessory lights were
still on.
carolyn  - Many Thanks   |IP:60.242.217.xxx |05-02-2009 18:25:59
Thanking you... was on line googling auto electricians in my area and
was lucky to check just on the off chance and sure enough located this post..
Being a middle aged female sure i would have been up for big $$$$ . Ur
instructions are terrific and it worked a treat on my 2000 verada.. again many

Narelle-  - Magna TJ 11 awd   |IP:58.169.8.xxx |16-05-2009 19:53:24
Xlent Info, My Mazda Manual had that info in it but not My Magna Manual and I
wasnt sure if the theory was the same, Bingo it was, worked a treat. I am very
Glad there are people like you out there happy to share information for free.
Cheers
Paul  - magna   |IP:63.217.120.xxx |21-07-2009 12:55:04
Cheers Phill, good to see this thread is still here after all this time. It
worked a treat, except my indicators didn't flash either, just a beep after I
pressed the remote.
Thanks again
Frank  - Magna Manual   |IP:123.200.226.xxx |10-08-2009 01:18:15
The magna owners manual definitely tells you how to teach the car to learn upto
4 remotes, this has to be done after a car battery change.
It is not hidden,
that info is there for all owners to read - if they bother to .
Frank  - Solder - dry joints in Remotes   |IP:123.200.226.xxx |10-08-2009 01:22:10
Also the remotes suffer from dry joints in solder of battery caddy to board, had
a friend re-solder them, now works great.
This is a common problem with these
remotes, hope I may have helped someone.
doug  - can you use an old remote?   |IP:118.93.247.xxx |01-09-2009 21:58:36
hi thanks for the info, wondered if the reprogramming would work only with a new
remote as i picked up a used on from my local wreckers and tried but with no
success ?
phill   |02-09-2009 00:52:42
avatar I don't know, but I would assume it should work. I think the car just listens
for the next remote that sends it a signal after you do the trick with the
ignition switch.
john   |IP:115.131.14.xxx |30-11-2009 09:37:33
fantanstic!!! saved me bucks...worked for my 99 magna, needed to do the ign
switch trick a couple of times first, then the lights flashed etc..

JIMMY  - spare key   |IP:124.148.162.xxx |30-01-2010 22:56:08
I have just bought a 2002 Magna, dead remote *no manual*. One mitsubishi
service guy told me how to do the programming (no cost), a friend told me if
that did not work, put blu-tak in the remote between casing and battery to
ensure connection and lo and behold it worked. Next thing I need is a spare
key. I begrudge spending lots of money on a spare key..;.any way round buying
one from the dealer as instructed by dealer???? thank for the good tips! saved
me bucks.
QUINNY  - REMOTE   |IP:115.131.200.xxx |16-02-2010 11:51:10

Sweet!! Works a treat.

You just saved me $70.
