LG TU500 ( CU500) Google Maps fix
Sunday, 09 December 2007
Warning, boring techie talk! I have a Telstra NextG LG TU500 mobile phone. I'm very happy with the phone even though it does have a few quirks and problems that can be a bit annoying. I'm even happier with Google Maps. It's a great application that you can download to the phone that allows you to see satellite photo's and then overlay street maps and directions. Unfortunately Google just upgraded this application to version 2.0.0 and now it's broken for the Australian TU500 and the Canadian Cingular CU500. It gives an "Invalid class error" when you try to start it. For those others who now have the same problem, you can click here to download an older version (1.5.4) of the same thing direct from Google to fix the problem.

Sorry that it doesn't work on your phone, but thanks for the heads up on its
release. It has a sort of GPS built in, based on the celltower you're connected
to.

You have to wonder how they managed to get all that data from the various
cell providers, they're usually pretty secretive about their tower locations,
aren't they?

It's a bit hard to hide a cell phone tower and most phones have a service mode
(mine does) that displays the cell ID. I guess they could then map the tower's
using their own GPS and wack it all into a big database. The biggest issue is
that the Google Maps application would need to obtain that info from your phone
and then pass it back to Google's servers for them to then work out where you
might be. There has to be a privacy issue there somewhere.

That bit (privacy) never crossed my mind. But you're right, it knows my IMEI,
my location, what sort of phone I've got etc.

Kinda scary.

Still, everywhere I
got here in Britain there's a ugly camera mounted on a pod watching me. It's
stupid.
