Now thats weird
Saturday, 17 March 2007
Fair dinkum! I know people put some weird things into Google, but someone has hit Tasweb after searching for "How to make your own rubber grommet". Can they really be serious? What sort of weirdo wants to make a rubber grommet, and then what on earth were they going to use it for? Whats even more intriguing, is why did Tasweb appear high enough in the Google results for them to click on it? If you are the person who did that search then please leave a comment on this story as I'd love to know why you really want to make your own rubber grommets!

Is how you've stopped my clever hacks
from appearing.

Does more than one person have to search
for "Phill Groom Convicted Criminal" before it shows
up in the box on the right?

Honestly, you ruin all
my fun!

BTW: Read this for a laugh, I am almost
embarrassed to link a TradeMe forum thread, but it is VERY
funny.

I dunno, I haven't done anything clever. I do delete stuff from time to time,
but not that one. I've just had a look in the database and that search isn't in
there. Can you believe that 1343 people have hit tasweb just this month after
doing a search at Google/MSN/Alta Vista etc and most of them are looking for
hairdressing games. I'm gunna have to make one because there is a BIG market out
there! That story is funny. My landlord keeps ignoring my complaints about my
hot water. Perhaps I should loose the cylinder?
phill  - How it works   |18-03-2007 15:47:12
The php that i wrote to do the funky search thingy just picks the last 10
distinct (ie unique) search keywords sorted by date. I actually use a database
table maintained by another bit of php written by someone else that provides me
with all of my stats. The data was all there so I just take a peek at it each
time someone loads the front page. The other bit of code doesn't record the
time, it only records the date and because mysql jumbles records up sometimes a
search will not appear if there have been more than 10 searches already that
day. Given that this site averages over 50 search hits every day there is a
high chance that your search won't appear, especially if it happens later in the
day.

I might modify the php a bit to keep some of the nastier stuff from
appearing!

It works still, the last few times have been very late in the day.

50 search
hits a day, that's pretty massive!

50 search hits a day, that's pretty massive!

50 was just a
guess. I just looked at the stats to see how many people have
hit Tasweb from a search engine and they
are very interesting;

Nov 06   362
Dec 06
  428
Jan 07    470
Feb 07
  737
Mar (so far) 07  1403

That's huge growth!
If you assume March will be about 2289 then that's an average
of 857 visits from search engine peoples a month over the
past 5 months (29 per day) but if you just take March's
expected figures then it works out to 74 per day!

Did you want to use my install of link:http://www.php myvisites.us/ to check out more detailed
stats? Or do you get good ones from the built
in Joomla stuff?

That's insane growth though, are
the google $$$ rolling in?

Tim
phill  - Google $$$   |19-03-2007 20:52:53
I've got the stats covered thanks, and I'm not allowed to talk about the Google
$$$ for fear that they might kill my account before I get my first cheque (that
is a clue by the way). All I'm allowed to say is that there are Google ads on
this site, and yes my Google account is credited with money each time an ad is
clicked. For that reason I'm not allowed to click them myself, but sometimes I
wish I could because some of them sound really cool!
