Shares suck
Thursday, 16 August 2007
stock_marketWhen you look at the ad for the Big Mac you know that it's nothing like the photo, but when I decided to start trading shares I went into it thinking that no matter what happened I would make money in the long run. That may still be true, but geez, no one told me it could be this bad. The share market has gone mental and every day seems to break the previous record for the biggest loss in a single day. All of the stock I'm holding has dropped well below the price I paid for it and at the moment I'm loosing almost $1000 a day! I've sold most of my shares, but the ones remaining are trading so low that I'm just going to hold onto them in the hope that sanity prevails soon and they head back towards the black. I guess the only ray of hope is that this opens up some buying opportunities as the prices at the moment are ridiculously low. Good companies announcing record profits with huge potential have lost value like crazy all because of some stupid lending practices in another country. I mean what does mortgage lending in the USA have to do with a nickel miner in Australia?

Just remember shares are for the long term.... I had some mining shares which were purchased in 1992 for $9 each. Sold in 1999 for $34 each. Rebought in 2001 for $13 each. Sold 2006 for $36 each. Hope to buy some more soon! Just be patient and don't think of it as "how much have i lost/gained this week?" Think in 5 year averages.

Thanks Lala, I know you are correct, but it's hard not to take a peek every now and then, especially when the market is going nuts! I'll post a new graph at the end of this month, but it's looking very sad after the past two weeks. Hopefully I can get on some bargains before it all picks up again to offset those stocks that I sold at a loss.
