Whats inside VB Warnie
Wednesday, 09 January 2008

vb_warnie

VB Warnie has been sitting on my coffee table completely silent for a few days now, so I decided to pull him apart (as you do). The instructions clearly state (they even give you a picture) that he must be sitting approximately 2 metres in front of your telly and that he would only talk during the Commonwealth Bank one day series. That's what made me think he must listen for tones during the telecast, but by pulling him apart I could tell for sure.

[UPDATE] If you have read the rest of this story (click the "Read more..." link below) and you have read any of the comments you would know that there are a lot of people that are very unhappy with this years VB promotional doll. VB Warnie has a few issues. There seems to be two main ones. If he does talk, then he is way too quiet. There is no way you can hear what he is saying with the telly at normal volume and any chat going on in the room will certainly drown out what he has to say. This is made worse by the fact that most of what he does say is only a few words, so by the time you realise he is speaking it's over. The other problem seems to be VB Warnie's that simply don't talk at all. At least one person has posted a comment here to say that theirs worked after they replaced the batteries. I would have thought that might muck up his internal clock, but maybe not.

I decided to have a look at some of my web site stats to get a feel for the problem. Since the ODI series started 356 people have hit this story after searching in Google. Many more have come from links on other sites (Digg for example), from simply entering www.tasweb.org in their browser, or via other search engines, but I decided to limit this to only Google.  Of those 356 people, 126 of them obviously have an issue with their doll. That leaves 230 others who just searched for stuff like "VB Warnie" (55 people). Bear in mind that a lot of them may have been having issues as well, so that makes my figures very conservative. My primary school math taught me that this means well over 35% of all people searching the net for info on VB Warnie have problems. That's a pretty high failure rate. I wonder if the guys in the suits at VB are aware of this (remember the feedback link on the VB Warnie website has been taken off line ever since the ODI series started) and if they are aware of it, I wonder if they are happy?

Below are some of the common Google search terms from my web site logs that I attrubted to VB Warnie problems;

to make warnie doll talk, warnie not talking, doll won't work, warnie volume, does the warnie doll talk, doll no talk, warnie doll doesnt work, +warnie + not working, +warnie + not working, to make talking warnie talk, warney won't talk, isn't the warnie doll working?, warnie broken, warnie doesnt say stuff, warnie speaker, doll volume, doll quiet, i turn my warnie doll up etc etc etc.........

Read on to see my thoughts and pictures on Warnies gizzards.

If your on the home page then click the "Read more...." link to see the pictures...

back_flap_openOK, the first thing I did was peel off the little green sticker on the back. I could feel a hollow bit so it had to be covering something. Behind I found a printed circuit board with a few exposed pads that must be used to program Warnie. I assumed at this point that this was used when he was first made and would never be of any use again, but later discoveries have me wondering about this.

back_open The next thing was to undo the four screws on the back and open him up. He was laying face down on the table during this operation, but I doubt it was the first time Warnie had found himself face down on a table. This revealed three main components. There was a surface mount printed circuit board with four wires coming off it. Two went to the battery compartment and two went to a speaker. Where was the microphone to pick up the tones from the telly? Hmmmm.

back_with_batteriesVB Warnie is heavy. Much heavier than Beefy and Boony, so I pulled out the battery compartment to find out why. There are three AA batteries in there. WHY? Three AA batteries will probably last for years. Could it be that they were cheaper than something smaller? Could it be that the electronics needed 4.5 volts? Could it be because VB Warnie has a really big speaker and is really loud and draws more current? Could it be that VB Warnie is intended to have a much longer life than just this summers one day cricket series?  This was when I thought about the exposed pads on the circuit board visible through the fairly largish hole in the back. Could it be that we will be able to reprogram VB Warnie later, or is it just to allow them to reprogram the ones they don't sell this year for next years series as well becuase they have signed Shane Warne up to a two year contract?

There are a few close up shots of the circuit board here. I looked up the chip on Google and it's a 2k EEPROM. That confirms that VB Warnie could be re programmable. Interestingly the manufacturer's web site says this part has been replaced and is not  suitable for new designs. Perhaps Warnie really is a bit dodgy. There is also a black blob. This is weird. It's as if they have sealed something up so that you can't see it as the blob has been splodged onto the board. If I was prepared to trash Warnie then I would prise the blob off, but I want to hear what he has to say, so I've left the blob intact. Maybe that's where he is hiding his mobile phone? I have no idea what the shiny silver cylindrical thing is. The code on it just brings up heaps of Chinese parts suppliers on Google with no description of what it might be. A crystal to make sure that VB Warnie's internal clock is accurate maybe? Given that he doesn't have a microphone he must be programmed to talk at certain times just like Beefy and Boonie last year.

Well, thats pretty much all there is to VB Warnie for 2008. I'll be sure to post another story if he ever talks. I guess I should leave you with the very important message printed on the side of VB Warnie in tiny little white letters.I 'm not sure exactly what they are trying to say. I hope that by pulling him apart to see what is inside and how VB Warnie works I've been "Enjoying him Responsibly", or is that a warning to women about the real Shane Warne?

This is hilarious!
We have warnie sitting on the coffee table waiting to hear
what he says and the same as you I was cynical about the need to have the TV on.
Its all about ratings I guess.
Half an hour to go..

my warnie doll has been talking. a few things i can rememeber are: you cant bat
you cant bowl... oh the baked beans have just kicked in... he said something
about magazines under the coffee table....he mumbles a bit so i cant understand
much more
phill  - Ours said something   |03-02-2008 18:33:15
We had him in the car with us today and he shouted something at exactly 3pm, but
we couldn't make out what it was. Did anyone else's talk at the same time?
cjb  - said a few things today   |IP:61.68.172.xxx |03-02-2008 19:52:24
He has said a few things today which we have missed - he is MUCH quieter than
the other 3 have been, but I just caught that one -

4:50pm Warnie
said:

"aah - I think the baked beans have kicked in"
Brent  - Disapointing Low Volume   |IP:220.240.29.xxx |03-02-2008 20:26:42
Mine has said a few things but the volume is way to low, the only way you would
hear him is to turn the TV down and I doubt they want that so unless he gets
louder and can be heard this years doll seems like a dud.
Brent  - He spoke   |IP:220.240.29.xxx |03-02-2008 20:29:47
Mine just said "why are people so unkind but I had him on the PC desk and
like less than a foot away. Volume low, best figure so far but the worst
interaction by the SOUNDS of it
phill  - Its a fact - Warnie is a dud   |03-02-2008 20:50:23
I have to agree with you guys. There is no way you can hear him with the telly
at normal volume, he hardly ever talks, and when he does it isn't very funny.

So far I've heard mine say "Bring back Daryl" ( a bit controversial
perhaps?), "Yes, Looking good Clarky" (but Australia weren't batting),
and "Why are people so unkind" (in a dodgy Kamahl accent). He has said a
few other things, but there is no way you can understand them because they are
soo damn quiet.

One other thing, don't knock on his head to try to wake him up
like I did. His head is really hard and really pointy and it hurts your
knuckles!

good level please stand up move to the wall so we can throw cricket balls at
you, what a goose!
bndybear  - against the wall   |IP:58.160.66.xxx |03-02-2008 21:17:53
he should stand up against the wall so we can all throw our warnie dolls at him.
I have never felt the want or need to open boonie dolls up to see whats inside
cause i didn't want to risk it not working but i'm definately going to open this
one up to see if i can make him work better.

1/2 hr before the start of play Warnie said "Pass us the remote, the
crickets about to start" He's been talking maybe once or twice per hour
since play began.
Brent  - Yes he speaks or should I say   |IP:220.240.29.xxx |03-02-2008 23:00:48
He has said a few things trouble is you only need the slightest noise and you
cant hear him. I can't believe that they (whoever they are) go to so much
trouble to put together a major promo and some goose fails to ensure that the
damn doll can be heard.

like me the night is young and full of potential"
Paul Wakeford  - How does it work?   |IP:203.26.177.xxx |05-02-2008 08:19:30
OK, I also heard the 'night full of potential' thing at the end of the cricket -
but was watching a different channel at the time. Hunting around, the thing is a
VEIL device which is said to read light fluctuations broadcast to your TV - but
surely you have to be on CH9 for it to work?
phill  - It must just be on a timer   |05-02-2008 23:02:01
There is no microphone and no light sensor, so I don't think Warnie is very
clever at all. He talks with or without the telly and when in front of the telly
his comments bear no relationship to what is going on. He talked in my car, he
talked in my backpack today (I took him to work!), when he was in front of my
telly he commented on Clarky's batting when Oz were fielding. I think Paul may
be thinking about the original Boonie who did interact with the telly (in a
fashion).

Understanding what he is saying is another matter. I had my backpack on my back
(where else would it be!) whilst I walked back to my car after work today and I
heard him go off. No idea what he said though. He seems to have trouble
stringing a decent sentence together. Most of his comments are only a few words
so by the time you have realised he is speaking you've missed it!

Have got 3 Warnies at home, all say the same line but about 5
minutes apart. Definitely a volume problem, unless you are sitting in an empty
room with no background noise. Also the comments have nothing to do with the
game of cricket being played.
Will definitely thing twice about continuing my
collection next year
Graeme  - flat batery in Doll   |IP:203.217.73.xxx |10-02-2008 23:37:54
Hi people,i pulled my doll apart and changed the 3 AA batterys in it,and within
30mins it was talking.
Mine had flat batterys from the start.
phill  - Good tip!   |11-02-2008 15:42:59
avatar Thats a great tip. Loads of people have come to this story after Google'ing for
stuff like "how to make VB Warnie talk" , so maybe a heap of them have
gone out with stuffed batteries, but you have to wonder, if VB Warnie really is
just on a timer, wouldn't removing the batteries muck up his internal clock?
Marilyn  - Mrs   |IP:58.169.9.xxx |11-02-2008 14:07:47

I bought 3 Warnies only one talks, the other two silent. I also changed
the batteries but still no luck, I think a refund is in order.
Brent  - Free   |IP:220.240.15.xxx |11-02-2008 15:18:35
Was in a bottle shop the other day and we spoke of this years lousy volume and
sound quality of the doll, the guy went over opened a box and gave me another
one after only purchasing six stubbies. He said the Rep stated that last years
got complaints of to loud and talking at 2am so if that is the case
"thanks
wingers"
but I really think it is a made up excuse to hide the fact that
this years doll is a dud. An on/off switch could have easily been added to the
doll if the 2am thing was a fact. Anyway the word is out to simply give them
away to whoever they please.
phill  - Story updated   |11-02-2008 15:39:28
avatar I've updated the main story with a bit of info from my web site stats. Check it
out. It looks as though a lot of the people searching the net for info on VB
Warnie are having issues with theirs. Don't forget to hit the Digg submit button
if you want to raise the profile of this story to help make a point to the suits
at VB. We only have 3 Digg's at the moment and I don't think that really
reflects public opinion.
Brent   |IP:220.240.134.xxx |13-02-2008 18:33:17
I think the problem is that most of us me included have no idea what hitting the
dig submit button is, where it is or what it does?????????
phill  - About Digg   |13-02-2008 21:52:43
avatar Sorry Brent! Digg is a website that has become very popular. If you don't know
what it is then just forget about my Digg comment. If you want to know more
about it, then visit their home page at www.digg.com . People who have a Digg
account can submit any web page that they think others may be interested in. On
Tasweb there is a fairly big yellow dig button at the top of every story. It
then appears on the Digg website as an upcoming story. Many people watch the
list of upcoming stories and then click through to them themselves. If they
agree that it's an interesting story then they might "Digg" it as well.
This raises it's profile and makes it hang around a bit longer on the Digg site.
Because of this the Digg site is a good indication of "what's hot"
around the Interwhatsit at any given time.

My Warnie spoke (or should I say mumbled) through the first 2 one day games then
went silent, until tonight. I replaced the AA batteries and within 10 minutes he
was mumbling again. I have had him in front of the TV since, but when he speaks
it has no relivance to what is going on with the cricket. Definatly on a timer
and replacing the batteries has not reset him.

Shame CUB Shame!
Brent   |IP:220.240.144.xxx |16-02-2008 14:37:03
I have placed mine back in the display cabinet with the other boony and beefy

can quote one complete phrase that he may have said. Looks great but the
speaking feature this year is a complete let down.

yeap mine stopped working a week ago, i called up today to complain on the 1800
number on t he site. "they stopped talking on sunday, yours just stopped
talking a little early" my guess is these were created months ago and the
batteres put in to try and make them last. i wont be partaking in the promotion
next year.

avatar My Warnie is still mumbling tonight so the comment they made about stopping on
Sunday is a bit odd.

Well thats it for this years talking doll, worst one by far, I couldn't quote
one phrase that the thing said, a very poor promotion indeed. If there is a next
year I hope they go back to the quality of the previous years, if not then don't
bother doing it.

I'd been trying to purchase a Warnie doll from the VB site but without success
as he sold out quickly. From what you guys have said I think it was just as
well I saved my money!

I got Boony and Beefy last year and I love them to bits.
They've travelled back to the UK with me and are now taking pride of place on
the bookcase and I show everyone who comes around.

Question - why don't VB
realise the potential of marketing in the UK as well? There are many ex pat
Aussies over here plus people like myself who have had the pleasure of living in
Aus but have moved back. Where's the VB? You used to be able to get it in
Asda's but they've stopped selling it, plenty of Fosters though Some brits
have no taste!

Oh well, heres hoping next years doll is better and that I
manage to get one!

eBay Australia has
plenty and cheaper than in the past because they were so bad.
I doubt the VB site had really sold out because heaps
of bottle shops were giving them away, unlike other
years.

Just to update this group on the parts so that if you have any mates that can
check it out to see if it can be reprogrammed to do anything else.
The black
blob is an IC that is directly bonded to the PCB. It could be a micro or
dedicated speech chip.
The silver can is a crystal used to keep the whole thing
in sync from the programme. The Atmel 24C02AN is a 2 wire serial EEPROM that
should be able to be reprogrammed.
As the "quality batteries (LOL)"
provided by ChungPak in China died early I decide to see what else can be done.
Will post later with any results.
